What to expect?
A transformative journey from identity loss to legacy-building, with FoundersOhana as a structuring companion in these stages.
Why Founders Ohana
Every year, thousands of businesses are sold for millions by their founders. Yet, no comprehensive support exists to help them through the emotional and psychological impacts of this transition. As a selling founder you are surrounded by a vast variety of legal and financial experts, but not by people who understand and can support you holistically in this transformational journey.
Regardless of whether you are still tied to an earn-out or completely free, Founders Ohana fills this gap by providing a safe space where founders can process their experiences, explore new opportunities, and find renewed purpose. Our members are carefully selected and invited into a community that understands their journey, offering unparalleled support, connection, and guidance.
Whatever stage you are in as a founder, even pre sale when drafting the SPA or in earn-out stage or fully exited we can support you by giving you access to our experienced network.
Supporting you through the stages
At FoundersOhana we have identified a clear 9 stage cycle through which founders go through post acquisition. Each of these stages have their own challenges. Our coaches and community members have experienced these stages and are equipped to support you personally through each of them. The stages can be grouped into two main phases: Grieving and Acceptance and Rebuild.
Our aim is to accelerate your progression through the Grieving and Acceptance phase so we can focus on where the ultimate value lies: The Rebuild phase.
The nine stage cycle and its challenges
-
DESCRIPTION: After the sale, founders often feel an intense sense of relief and euphoria as the burden of the process of selling the business lifts and the excitement of new possibilities emerges. It’s a moment to celebrate this significant milestone in life, with family. At this stage wealth managers and bankers often step in to offer their finacial support and guidance as the new phase of financial freedom in life begins.
CHALLENGE: The initial high can be short-lived, and the reality of what comes next may not have set in yet. Which investment advice to trust and how to ensure that the next generations can benefit is also a broadly shared challenge amongst founders.
WHAT WE OFFER: You don't need us at this stage. You should enjoy and cherish this stage with people close to you and your loved ones.
HOW: It's your party. Enjoy it ! -
DESCRIPTION: After the initial excitement subsides, many founders face a deep sense of emptiness, as if a part of their identity has been lost with the sale of their business.
CHALLENGE: Founders may struggle with feelings of emptiness and a lack of direction.
WHAT WE OFFER: We offer you a safe place where we will listen to your journey and share experiences so that you don't feel alone. It's okay to grieve and we will support and accompany you in this process. We help you find the mechanism that works for you to close the chapter and be proud about your achievements in this vulnerable moment. We provide a safe space where you can share your journey, grieve the loss, and be supported. Together, we help you find the right tools to close this chapter with pride in your achievements, ensuring you don’t face this process alone. -
DESCRIPTION: Founders may feel disconnected from their previous colleagues, employees, and the business world. Friends and family might not fully understand the emotional toll of selling, which can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection. Your environment doesn't understand that money does not equal happiness and that no amount of money can replace the emptiness left by the sold business.
CHALLENGE: Many founders report that while they gained financial wealth, they lost the close-knit social and professional networks they once had.
WHAT WE OFFER: We provide a closely knit supportive and connected community who genuinely understands the journey you are going through, providing a safe space for you to share your experiences. Through focused discussions on relevant topics, we help you reconnect in meaningful ways, ensuring you feel understood and less isolated. -
DESCRIPTION: With the sale of their business, founders may experience an identity crisis, questioning who they are without the company that once defined them and struggling to redefine themselves outside of their primary role as a business owner.
CHALLENGE: Many founders may feel like they have lost their purpose and sense of self-worth, grappling with the question, "What now?".
WHAT WE OFFER: Through personalised coaching and goal-setting, we guide you in finding new avenues for fulfilment, whether through launching a new enterprise or contributing to meaningful causes.
-
DESCRIPTION: After the sale, founders may feel regret or resentment, particularly when new owners take the company set objectives which are misaligned with the founder’s vision and drive the company in directions that conflict with their values.
CHALLENGE: Many founders find it hard to deal with the emotional impact of seeing their business change, especially if they no longer have control or influence.
WHAT WE OFFER: We offer you a confidential peer group where you share your stories with others who have experienced similar struggles. You can attend workshops focused on understanding the natural evolution of companies after acquisition, helping you emotionally detach from the outcomes you cannot control and embrace the next chapter of your life. -
DESCRIPTION: Over time, founders begin to accept the reality of their new situation. They start to adjust to their new life, whether that means stepping away completely or finding ways to stay involved with the business in an advisory role.
CHALLENGE: Finding ways to reconcile their feelings and move forward with a positive mindset can be difficult but essential.
WHAT WE OFFER: We help you document your achievement and focus on the positive success of your past chapter to put a close to it allowing you to move forward with a settled mind.
-
DESCRIPTION: At this stage, founders start to actively search for new opportunities, passions and projects. This might include philanthropy, mentoring, starting a new business, or pursuing personal passions they didn’t have time for before.
CHALLENGES: The search for new purpose can be long and requires patience, as founders explore what truly fulfils them inside and outside of the business world.
WHAT WE OFFER: We help founders identify, explore, prioritise and pursue new opportunities, whether through philanthropy, mentoring, starting new ventures, or exploring personal passions. We provide practical strategies to navigate this exploration and discover what brings lasting fulfilment.
-
DESCRIPTION: Finally, founders find new goals, professionally and/or personally, that bring them fulfilment. They may channel their energy into new ventures, give back through philanthropy, or enjoy life with family and friends. Their journey has transformed from one of frustration to one of personal growth and purpose.
CHALLENGES: By this time founders have overcome most psychological challenges. The legwork has been done and now it’s all about building out the newly embarked journey, aiming to achieve the refound purpose whilst being surrounded by the newly established network and peers.
WHAT WE OFFER: When relevant and possible, we are there to accompany you on this journey in whatever role needed: business partner, advisor or just as a supporter. You remain a highly valued member of the FoundersOhana community attending inspiring events and forever growing your network of extraordinary like minded and passionate entrepreneurs.
-
DESCRIPTION: In the later stages, many founders begin to focus on their legacy, both in terms of family (e.g., securing the financial future of generations to come) and in terms of the broader impact they want to leave on the world.
CHALLENGES: Founders may find it challenging to figure out how to make a meaningful impact beyond personal wealth creation.
WHAT WE OFFER: Members share experiences on how to build a legacy which can serve as an inspiration and provide insights as well as contacts with experienced professionals in this space.

Nick Celis
Several years ago, Nick went through the process of selling his own company, so he understands firsthand the emotional and professional challenges that come with such a life-changing event. About three years ago, he embarked on a new journey, working closely with a co-founder who had recently sold his business. As Nick became his right-hand man, he witnessed him struggle with feelings of loss, disconnection, and uncertainty, despite the financial success.
Nick helped him navigate this difficult period, but they realised that many founders lack the support they need during this transition. This experience inspired them to create FoundersOhana, with the mission of helping founders process the transition, find new direction, and transform their lives by connecting them with a supportive community of peers and experienced professionals.
